How To Face Paint

If you are a beginner, you can learn everything you need to get started by taking Ginger’s online course through Universal Class.  It’s called Face Painting 101 and you can learn more about it here:

https://www.universalclass.com/i/course/face-painting-101.htm

In this class you’ll learn:

What you need to have in your face painting kit

How to come up with designs

Basic face painting techniques

Plus the class includes a lot of business ideas, what to charge, and how to handle events.  It’s a lot of secret sauce for a beginner’s class!  There is nothing else like this 12 part series anywhere on the web.

Beyond that, face painting is about practice.  Ginger has a dance studio that is nice enough to let her come in one busy evenings and practice on the students.  This is a crucial part of becoming a good face painter – practicing on live people.  Some people are lucky to have family members or neighbors who can be models.  Others have to work a little harder to come up with willing participants.

It is in this area where we have seen people fail at becoming the best artist they can be – unwillingness to practice their art without being paid to do so.  It is unfortunate because face painting can pay very well, but you have to earn that pay.  The only way to get good is to get in a lot of hours of painting.

There are numerous classes and conventions around the country.  If you are serious about becoming a paid face painters, it is worth every penny to attend these events.  Bring a notebook and take a lot of notes.  Take pictures with your phone when it’s offered.  You will grow your skill set in leaps and bounds.  For Ginger, this is no “good enough.”  She continues to attend classes, workshops, buy training books and try new products and tools.  There is always something we can improve even if we have been face painting for many years.

Workshops and Classes

Ginger occasionally teaches classes in face painting and balloon twisting.  You can email us to sign up to be included on the Circus Kaput Workshop emails.  Once on the list you’ll receive emails regarding all of the workshops and classes that are open to the public.  Circus Kaput puts on about 20 workshops per year in all different performance areas.  Most workshops are limited to Circus Kaput artists exclusively.
